Deepthroat Spray: Is it Safe?

Deepthroat numbing spray is one of those products you can find in every sex store, and cheaply, too. Is it really a miracle cure for your gag reflex, or is it just another overhyped product you don’t need?

Here’s exactly what you can expect from deepthroat sprays, and why they’re not as harmless as you might think…

What Does Deepthroat Spray Do?

Deepthroat spray is a flavored spray that contains a mild anesthetic, usually benzocaine or lidocaine. They’re also available as gels, drops or even mints, but all of them are designed to do the same thing: numb your throat. This is meant to help you suppress your gag reflex so that you can give deeper, more intense blowjobs.

You may have heard of people using Chloraseptic spray as a deepthroating aid, too. Chloraseptic spray is just a brand of numbing spray that’s meant for soothing sore throats, and it contains phenol, another numbing agent.

Does Deepthroat Spray Work?

When looking at different deepthroat sprays online, you may well see that reviews are mixed. Some people swear by it, while others feel it is a total waste of money.

Of course, the effect it has depends a lot on the person using it, how they’re using it, and which deepthroat spray they’re using. However, the way I see it, it’s less about whether deepthroat spray works and more about whether it’s really worth it.

Why I Don’t Recommend Deepthroat Spray

As a sex expert and educator, I recommend that you stay away from numbing deepthroat sprays. While you might hear anecdotally that it’s a lifesaver, in reality, the risks far outweigh the benefits.

First off, using a deepthroat spray greatly increases your risk of injury and/or infection. Perhaps this goes without saying, but your gag reflex is there for a reason! By numbing your throat and suppressing your gag reflex, it’s pretty easy to go too far down and cause yourself some damage. This could lead to bleeding, infections, as well as a nasty sore throat.

Secondly, it’s very difficult to numb only the throat, and most of the time you’ll also end up numbing your mouth, tongue and even your nasal passages. While it will only be temporary, this can be a pretty uncomfortable experience. Plus, it’s unlikely that having a fully numb mouth will make your blowjob skills any better.

Similarly, deepthroat sprays also transfer easily to the penis, making your partner numb, too. While you might be able to go deeper than usual, his penis will be desensitized, which really defeats the whole point of a blowjob in the first place!

And finally, the entire existence of deepthroat sprays perpetuate the idea that you have to go super deep to give a good blowjob! Deepthroating is only one of many techniques in the oral sex arsenal, and it’s certainly not the only way to give a great-feeling blowjob. If you can do it, and your partner enjoys it, then great for you! Otherwise, listen to your body and don’t feel like you have to numb yourself just to go deeper.

Safer Ways to Deal with Your Gag Reflex

I’m an advocate of listening to your body during sex. Being mindful as you’re getting down and dirty can help you figure out what you are and aren’t comfortable with, as well as what you actually like and dislike, not just what you think you should do. If you’re trying to deepthroat and hating it, don’t force yourself just because you think you should!

However, of course there are many of us who do want to give a deeper blowjob, but have a very uncooperative gag reflex. If that sounds like you, then don’t turn to the deepthroat spray just yet. Here are some ways you can deal with your gag reflex whilst still being kind to your body and knowing your limits…

Try to Relax

This might seem a little too simple, but the truth is that your gag reflex becomes more active the more worried you are. Before you even start giving oral, take some breaths, massage your jaw muscles and know that you can stop at any time. Whatever happens, happens!

Control the Depth

You can prevent your partner’s penis from going too far in by using your hands around the base of the shaft, which doubles as a handjob, too! Alternatively, use a male stroker like the Fun Factory Manta or the stretchy BlowYo to add extra texture and sensations to the experience.

Take Breaks

If you find yourself getting a bit overwhelmed, give your gag reflex some time to relax. In the meantime, use your hands, or other fellatio techniques like licking, kissing and shallow sucking to keep the fun going.

Practice Within Your Limits

It is possible for some people to calm down an overactive gag reflex by practicing. You can do this in a no-pressure environment by practicing on a flexible dildo — it can’t complain! Others suggest practicing when brushing your teeth by brushing the back of your tongue, but this requires some caution so you don’t hurt yourself. Similarly, stay away from bananas, as they can easily break off and cause you to choke.

More Ways to Make Blowjobs Better

We already briefly mentioned using a stroker or masturbator alongside your blowjob. But, what are some other things you can add to your blowjob kit and level up your oral?

Flavored Lube

Flavored lube is no replacement for good hygiene, but it can make the blowjob experience that little bit more pleasant for the giver. There are all kinds of flavors out there, but most are very sweet (which also means they shouldn’t be used in the vagina or anus).

I recommend checking out Sliquid’s Swirl range, a high-quality water-based lube with no glycerine or parabens. There are 8 flavors to choose from, including cherry vanilla, piña colada, pink lemonade and blackberry fig.

For those who love dessert, there’s Wicked’s water-based lubes in flavors like salted caramel, cinnamon bun and blueberry muffin, which are long-lasting and never sticky.

Tingles

You might have heard of age-old trick of sucking a mint just before you give a blowjob, which gives a unique fresh and tingly sensation. These days, there are a huge range of products that can provide all kinds of tingles, from mints to drops to lip gloss!

Some of the best to check out include Doc Johnson’s GoodHead Tingle Drops, flavored lube drops with added menthol, and the Hot Kiss tingly lip gloss that provides warm and cool sensations for both of you!

Mouthwatering Aids

Like with all sex, lubrication makes everything better. If you struggle with dry-mouth while giving blowjobs, or just want to get extra sloppy, then you might love a mouthwatering spray or mint to get your salivary glands working overtime!

Try the Slow Sex mouthwatering spray with malic acid, a substance also found in super sour candy. That means it’s a totally safe way to get your mouth watering. There’s also Flintts mouthwatering mints, which come in a variety of flavors and strengths. They’ll make you salivate and offer a sparkling, tingly sensation!
