Method

Here’s a simplification of our approach. Much of the model is based on

1. Publication Year: We assume that a book sells 50% of its total sales in the first year, and then sales decline by 50% each subsequent year.
2. Bestseller Ranking: We can assume that a lower ranking (i.e., a higher position on the bestseller list) correlates with higher sales. For simplicity, we assume that the number of copies sold is inversely proportional to the square root of the ranking. This reflects the idea that the difference in sales between the #1 and #2 books is likely much larger than the difference between the #100 and #101 books.
3. Price: The price of the book doesn’t directly affect the number of copies sold, but it does affect the total revenue. We can calculate the revenue by multiplying the estimated number of copies sold by the price. Assuming then, that the price was not changed on individual types of books.
   • Book type: As a sidenote to pricing, we estimated a spread of sales across all book types advertised on Amazon. Typically Kindle, E-book, Audiobook, Paperback, and Hardcover with differing prices.
4. Number of Reviews: We assume that a higher number of reviews correlates with higher sales. For simplicity, we assume that the number of copies sold is directly proportional to the square root of the number of reviews. This reflects the idea that not all buyers leave a review, and the likelihood of a buyer leaving a review doesn’t necessarily increase linearly with the number of copies sold. This is important as insights tell us books with low number of copies sold often have a proportionate higher number of reviews per copy sold.

In general we let the models work to improve on estimating by providing insights into the actual sales data of some of the books on this list. So while most are estimate we do actually have specific and accurate data on some of the books. While we cannot disclose those specific books it did help tremendously in providing very accurate estimates – even when we, as a test of the models accuracy exempted some of the data we had specific data on and let the model estimate the sales per book title. In other words, we believe that we, with the use of our model, have been able to accurately estimate the total copies sold of sex toy books and the revenue generated from it.

In the next section, we present a detailed table that provides a snapshot of the current monthly sales for each sex toy book. This table includes the title of each book, its publication date, and the number of copies sold per month.
