Myth-Busting Yoni Egg Benefits, Plus Some Safe Alternatives

Ah yoni eggs, the beautiful yet highly contested eggs made of semi-precious stones, claimed to have all sorts of benefits. From more practical powers, such as improving pelvic floor function, to more transcendental ones, like awakening your feminine energy, some claim them to be a panacea for vaginal wellness. Unfortunately, many of the claimed benefits of yoni eggs are not true and are scientifically unsubstantiated. And, even more than that, yoni eggs can actually put your vagina at risk.

Ok, let me preface this post by saying I love crystals! I wear them daily, I have them in my house, I grew up around crystal healing, BUT you shouldn’t be putting them inside your vagina! Believe me, I wish this wasn’t true! Crystal yoni eggs are incredibly beautiful. I’ve looked at them longingly so many times, but I also appreciate my vagina and refuse to use anything that puts it in danger!

This post will examine some of the main claims made about the benefits of yoni eggs and do a bit of myth-busting. I also suggest some safer alternatives to keep you and your vagina happy!

Claim # 1: Yoni Eggs Are Good For Training Your Pelvic Floor

Both yoni eggs and Kegel balls have been touted as miracle cures for all pelvic floor-related issues, as well as improving the quality of your orgasms. Not only is this untrue, but they can, in fact, have the opposite effect.

While a weak pelvic floor might be to blame for bladder issues or sexual dysfunction, something else could be causing the problems. Assuming it’s a weak pelvic floor and only focussing on strengthening your pelvic floor muscle can actually do more harm than good.

  • If a weak pelvic floor is the root of your problems, it’s important to learn how to perform exercises properly, preferably from an expert. Yoni eggs do not allow you to complete proper pelvic floor exercises.
  • The issues might come from a hypertonic floor — one that is unable to properly relax. In this case, yoni eggs will exacerbate the problem. 
  • There could be other underlying medical issues causing your problems. Assuming it’s a weak pelvic floor means you might miss out on accurate diagnosis and effective treatment 

The best way to find out the cause of your problems is to consult a doctor or pelvic floor specialist. They will be able to accurately diagnose your problem and find an appropriate solution.

How Yoni Eggs Can Damage Your Pelvic Floor Muscles

When you wear a yoni egg for an extended amount of time, you are either contracting your pelvic floor for way too long. This extended contraction of your muscles without any relaxation can actually damage your pelvic floor muscles. Not only that, it even lead to painful penetrative sex.

Better Options for Pelvic Floor Health

Like all exercises, you should contract and relax your muscles to build up strength. Learning how to locate, tense, and release your pelvic floor takes practice. The absolute best way to learn how to exercise your pelvic floor muscles is to consult an expert. Although yoni eggs are not going to benefit your pelvic floor, there are some other options!

However, many of the crystals used to make yoni eggs are porous to a greater or lesser degree. This means they have minuscule holes that can provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mold. I always recommend buying non-porous sex toys, and it’s no different when it comes to yoni eggs. Each time you use the egg, it can absorb natural fluids from your body, which can remain even after washing. Over time, this can lead to nasty infections. Yeah, not the healing image you had in mind, right!

If the benefit of yoni eggs that interests you the most is the healing power of crystals, try to incorporate crystals into your wellness and healing in other ways. You can have them in your home, wear them as jewelry, use them during meditation, or even pop a small one in your bra!

An Alternative: Silicone Balls

Kegel balls aim to achieve some of the same benefits as yoni eggs by helping you locate and train your pelvic floor muscles. However, this means they also have some of the same issues as discussed above when it comes to performing the exercises correctly.

They do have one significant advantage, though — they are body safe. Silicone is non-porous, so there’s nowhere for germs or bacteria to hide. This makes it much easier to keep the balls clean and reduce the risk of infection.

If you want to use Kegel balls, I always recommend buying ones made of a non-porous material, such as silicone, glass or metal, and you should avoid anything with a fabric cord as that is a prime place for bacteria to multiply! If you want more stimulation, you can also find many great vibrating Kegel balls!

Claim # 3: Yoni Eggs Awaken You Feminine Sexual Energy

One of the claimed benefits of yoni eggs is that they can help you awaken your female sexual energy and heal your relationship with your sexual organs. Feminine sexual energy isn’t something you can get from an egg but rather an embodied feeling that you can cultivate. As gynecologist Dr. Jen Gunter put it so well, your feminine energy isn’t only held in your genitals. Sexual energy is something you can cultivate whether you have a uterus, vagina, or vulva, or not. 

If you want to awaken and connect with your sexual energy, there are plenty of ways to get in touch with your sexual side that don’t put your vagina at risk. Of course, the subjective nature of this means what works for one person might not work for you. However, the journey to finding what lights your spark will help you get to know yourself more intimately!

  • Practice mindful masturbation: Connect to your body, by breathing deeply and imagining the energy travelling to your genitals. Explore sensual touch over your whole body, and really slow down and enjoy the sensations in your body.
