Abortions by race [Shocking numbers]

By Bedbible Research Center / February 16, 2023

We’ve just released the largest abortion report available. In the process of doing that, we stumbled upon some interesting statistics on abortions by race and decided to highlight the findings in a new piece. Simply because we find it too shocking not to.

The below conclusions are based on a dataset of 42.428 US females that have had an abortion.

As it appears, the abortion rate for Black women was 39%, which is the highest among all racial and ethnic groups. The abortion rate for Hispanic women was 21%, while the rate for white women was 33% and the last 7% is categorized into Others. So in other words, 4 out of 10 abortions are on black women.

How to help women have fewer unintended pregnancies?

It’s important to note that there are many factors that contribute to these abortion rates by race, including differences in access to healthcare and other socioeconomic factors. It’s also important to approach this topic with sensitivity and empathy for all perspectives involved. But some of the most influential strategies to help women have fewer unintended pregnancies are:

  1. Access to contraception: Women who have access to a range of effective contraceptive methods are more likely to avoid unintended pregnancies. This can include birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive implants, condoms, and emergency contraception. Improving access to contraception, especially in low-income communities, can help reduce unintended pregnancies.
  2. Comprehensive sex education: Providing comprehensive sex education to young people can help them make informed decisions about their sexual health and prevent unintended pregnancies. This education should include information about contraceptive methods, STI prevention, and healthy relationships.
  3. Support for pregnant women: Many women who experience unintended pregnancies do not feel like they have the resources or support they need to carry a pregnancy to term. Providing support to pregnant women, such as access to affordable prenatal care, can help them make the best decision for themselves and their families.
  4. Addressing social and economic inequalities: Women who experience poverty, racism, and other forms of social and economic inequality are more likely to have unintended pregnancies. Addressing these root causes can help reduce unintended pregnancies and improve overall reproductive health outcomes for women.

By taking a comprehensive approach that includes these strategies and others, we can help women have fewer unintended pregnancies and achieve better reproductive health outcomes.
