Other Facts
The above tables are the most basic tabulations of the flower statistics dataset. Feel free to reach out for full access.
Some of the more interesting findings from the analysis are shared below:
Employment and average wage
- The US flower industry employs 84,011 people through over 35,000 companies (flourists, online, distributers and etc.).
- The average wage in the Floral industry is $29,140 (florist)
- The Flower industry experience the sharpest decline in revenue in 2020 of -6.2%.
Florists
As we just learned the average florist earns a yearly wage of less than $30,000.
However, the average florist shop makes an annual turnover of $362,318.
Cut flowers
There are a lot of different types of flowers. One of the distinctions are so-called “cut” flowers, meaning those that are not possible to re-plant.
In 2019 the number of cut flowers produced in one year was 528,096,000 – BUT! Only in Malaysia.
In the world, more than 132,000bn cut flowers are produced each year.
Flower production movement during the oil crisis
From aggregating datasets predating those we have it becomes apparent that the 1970’s oil crisis pushed the industry growth and production facilities south.
It caused much of the world’s actual flower production to become significantly more expensive. By moving south, where warmer climates and cheaper labor exists prices could be kept at the same levels going forward.
This attracted the industry in large part and became the renaissance for flower production in countries such as Kenya, Malaysia, and Ecuador.
Rose producing countries
Top rose producing countries are India, China, Ecuador, Colombia, Kenya, Mexico, Italy, Thailand, and Japan.
While the world’s top flower producers are most famous for the tulip.
Kenya flower industry employment
Over 2 million people in Kenya are employed in the flower industry.
1% of Kenya’s GDP ($800 million a year) is from the floral market and companies.
33% of roses sold in EU have been produced in Kenya.
Tambuzi Limited, one of Kenyas 130 producers, grows eight million flowers annually.
Equator Flowers farm located in Kenya, produce 100,000 rose stems a day. During the pandemic they lost 80% of their orders in the first 3 months. This equated to a loss of $ 300,000 in revenue.
Loss of value during transport
Flowers are logically a hard produce to transport. It is estimated that for each day in transport cut flowers lose 15% of their value.
This is despite the fact that almost without exception cut flowers are shipped in cold environments to keep them fresh for longer. This is also called the “cold-chain” process.
The Netherlands
The Netherlands are responsible for 50.7% of the export of flowers.
The Netherlands used 2,726,046 acres for the production of outdoor flower bulbs.
