CalExotics Volt Electro-Beads Review

My Verdict
Overall, the CalExotics Volt is a fantastic Swiss Army Knife of sex toys. It's long, beaded, vibrates, and even electrocutes (mildly)! That's a lot of function for one toy. It's easy to use, has a wide range of intensity, and the material seems like good quality. The price seems to be about average for other e-stim toys, so I don't really seem any reason not to recommend it. I honestly didn't know what to expect going in, but the Volt is quickly becoming one of my favorites!

Personal Experience

With No Bells or Whistles
Ignoring the impressive features of the Volt for a minute, I think the basic shape of the toy is very nice. It’s pretty basic, nothing fancy. It is long and thin, meaning it will easily reach as deep as you want. The bumps at regular intervals give it a beaded texture that feels great, but the bumps are rather small. If someone were to buy this only for the sake of getting a beaded sex toy, it would be fairly disappointing, but that’s not what the Volt is for. Given that there’s so much more going on at any moment, I think it’s a nice addition. It’s something to keep moving the toy around interesting without taking up the spotlight from the flashy stars of the show.Add A Little Shake
The vibration feature is fantastic. I’m always a big fan of this feature, and it’s still my favorite part of the CalExotics Volt. There are three intensity settings, ranging from mild to just past moderate. It’s not the most intense vibration toy, but it doesn’t need to be. There’s 4 different settings of different speed pulses after the basic intensity ones, which is appreciated. The gaps between the pulses of vibration are perfect for focusing on both this and the shocking sensations at the same time. And A Twist To Amp Up The Pleasure
The Volt is the first e-stim (I’ve also heard it called electrosex, electro-stim, etc…) product I’ve ever tried, so I thought it necessary to test it first with the back of my hand. I needed to know what I was getting into. I found the first setting of electrical shock to be barely noticeable. I actually had to grab the metal contacts with my fingers to really get a sense of what this was putting out. The first setting isn’t even in the range of what I would call “painful”, just kind of tingly. There are 5 settings, but even with my fingers, it’s pretty hard to gauge the difference from one setting to the next. I can definitely tell the difference between the minimum and maximum setting though. The maximum setting hurts! Not a lot, but just enough that I can’t really keep holding on to it. When applied to a butt instead of fingertips, things are a little less sensitive down there. I can keep it on max setting as long as I want without the pain ever getting too much. It’s the perfect amount. I have a few notes for other first-timers though. While most of the pain goes away pretty quickly after turning it off or removing it, it sometimes leaves my muscles twitchy and tingly for a while. It can be a little uncomfortable, especially if you’re used to going to sleep after using a sex toy. Second, it requires firm contact on both halves of the plate for maximum effect. Clenching down on it and using less lube made me feel it more. Finally, It feels the most like electricity (good, exciting pain) when the e-stim plates were right at the opening, and as it goes deeper it can start to feel more like a muscle cramp (bad, uncomfortable pain). I think one of the few possible improvements on this toy would be to move both the e-stim sections down a bump, as even beginners shouldn’t have much problem getting there.Design

The CalExotics Volt looks sleek, inviting, and simple. The shape is fine-tuned for the best experience alongside the other functions. The controls are conveniently placed and intuitive to use. The e-stim had exactly the right amount of kick for me at max setting, and I'm willing to bet there's a wide range of people for who the other 4 settings are perfect as well. The only thing holding it back from a perfect score is how high up on the toy the e-stim contacts are, making the best e-stim experience at a point when it's not fully inserted.
Ease of Use

As far as width, the toy starts narrow and doesn't get much bigger. It's pretty trivial to insert, and even if you've never had a sex toy before, it shouldn't pose much of a challenge (I am not recommending e-stim for your first sex toy!). The controls sound complicated at first but it boils down to "long press for off or on, short press to change setting". The controls are surprisingly always within reach as well; the angle for changing settings on the fly really isn't as awkward as I thought it would be. Just to drive home the accessibility of this sex toy, all three buttons light up when their corresponding feature is on. You don't have to search by feel in the dark. I love it.
Quality

The quality of the CalExotics Volt seems good. It is difficult to judge if the buttons or the charger will wear out over time, but at least for now, everything is holding up solid. The material seems sturdy, the controls are responsive, and the battery lasts a long time.
Price

The price seems to be about on par with other e-stim products that have other functions at the same time, such as vibration. If you just want to try e-stim by itself first, there are cheaper options, but I still think this is a pretty good value. There's a lot more than just the e-stim that the Volt brings to justify the price. If you are considering buying an e-stim toy, I'd recommend saving, if you can, to buy something like this.
Performance

The performance of the CalExotics Volt was good. There's a couple minor things here. Not being able to tell the difference between the e-stim settings easily means that it's possible to forget which setting you are currently on, making it a bit of a hassle when you want to change to a specific setting. I'm not good at counting in the middle of that kind of situation. Second, is that the vibration is quite loud. Other than that, everything works great. I've charged mine once and the battery shows no sign of slowing down. The vibration is steady, and the electrical shocks are as sharp as ever.
Packaging

The packaging was so sturdy it could have been delivered by canon. The CalExotics Volt comes inside a sturdy box, decorated with info about the Volt. Inside, there's a protective black foam insert, cradling both the Volt and its charger.
Materials and care

The Volt is silicone along the shaft, metal-coated ABS plastic around the controls, and the metal contacts are only described as "nickel-free alloy". While it is waterproof enough to clean under a sink, it should not be submerged in water. Like other silicone toys, clean with liquid soap and warm water, and use water-based lubes.
