    The Test and Reviews Explained

    FAQ

How do I suggest bondage to my partner?
To engage in healthy bondage play, you and your partner should both agree on what you’re comfortable with before you begin. Have an open and honest dialogue with your partner about the roles you’re each drawn toward so that you both feel comfortable and confident experimenting.
    Is hemp bondage rope safe?
Everything comes with a risk. By using fit-for-purpose hemp bondage rope, communicating with your partner, and taking it as slow as you need to fully grasp the knots you are tying, you are minimizing that risk as much as possible.
How long should my hemp bondage rope be?
Japanese Shibari practices usually use 23 feet ropes. However, many Western riggers use rope 26 to 33 feet to create incredibly intricate and lengthy designs.
What thickness should my rope be?
Most suspensions use 6 mm or 8 mm rope. 8 mm is more robust, but 6 mm is easier to work with.
How to soften hemp rope for bondage?
Known as “conditioning” the rope, you’ll begin the process by dropping your rope into boiling water for a few minutes. Next, remove the rope, secure it in a taut position, and leave it there for a few days to dry. Once dry, you’ll need to “polish” the rope by running it over a metal pole, loosening the fibers further. After the entire rope has been “polished”, burn off any stray hairs and treat the entire rope with mineral oil. Leave it out to dry again before use. It’s important to note that while conditioning your rope will make it softer, it also weakens the rope!

    What is hemp rope?

Bondage rope is a type of specialty rope used to restrict movement, wrap, suspend, or restrain, as part of BDSM activities. Hemp bondage rope is made of a natural material and is GREAT for suspending, as it’s super secure and durable. An 8 mm hemp rope size is ideal for critical support lines, but like with other ropes, you can also use the easier-to-maneuver 6 mm hemp rope if you wish. Since it’s made from hemp, this type of bondage rope is easy to make, fully biodegradable, and environmentally friendly!

This hand-finished rope has a distinctive sweet grassy smell. It is for many a large part of the appeal of hemp over other types of rope. As hemp is a natural fiber, the tones and intensity of scent will vary from harvest to harvest. The best part about Hemp rope is that is works with you and your lover over time, developing through use. The rope ages uniquely to each individual’s tying style and absorbs the body oils from the skin, like the tanning process of leather.

The Essential Companion to Bondage Rope

These safety scissors are NOT for kids.

Is Hemp Bondage Rope Suitable for Beginners?

    Not really...

    Not really...

    Not really...

We wouldn’t particularly recommend hemp rope for beginners, and there are a few good reasons why:

    • Hemp rope is expensive! If you’re just getting into it, you don’t want to be spending a lot of money on something you may not even enjoy.
    • It can be difficult to clean, care for, and store. The natural material can be a lot to take on, and may be best left for when you’re more experienced.
    • The scent can be a lot to get used to, especially if you’re completely unfamiliar with bondage rope.

    But?

    But?

    But?

There’s always a but! Hemp rope can be good for starters, and if you do your research, you minimize any potential risk. Hemp rope has really excellent tooth; you can feel quite certain that your hitches will do the job to hold things in place with far fewer knots required. So while we don’t recommend it, we can’t really stop you.

    Safety first!

    How to use hemp rope

Always have a pair of safety scissors on hand, like the ones recommended above. Scissors like these are essential back-ups in case something goes wrong during the session, or, perhaps more awkwardly, if you just have trouble untying them at the end of play. It happens to the best of us!

    Have a safe word

    Have a safe word

Trust and mutual consent between partners is the foundation of bondage. However, it may be hard to distinguish between participating in the ‘scene’ and an honest request to slow down or stop the experience in the middle of a session. Ensure you establish a safe word with your partner that is distinct enough from your play to take them out of it.

    Communicate

    How to use hemp rope

When you play, pay attention to any tingling, numbness, coldness, or burning in your limbs, especially your hands and fingers, and notify your partner immediately. You don’t want to risk permanent nerve damage for the sake of a scene, and a good top will understand and respect good communication.

    Suspension

    Suspension

    Suspension and partial suspension is the practice of tying a person in such a way as to support their weight with rope. Partial suspension means that part of a person’s weight is supported by the rope, e.g. their torso, or their legs;
Full suspension means their entire body is lifted off the ground and is supported only by the rope.

    How to clean hemp rope

Cleaning bondage rope can be a little more complex than other toys, hemp is a natural material that can develop rot and mildew. Cleaning your rope is not recommended, as you need to wash, dry, singe and oil it every time. Each time you repeat this process it weakens the rope’s fibers, which is very dangerous as it makes play unpredictable, and makes the rope unfit for suspensions. The main thing to consider is that natural ropes will get moldy if they're not dried correctly, so make sure you look at the guide provided with the rope to ensure it lasts as long as it should.

    Porous
    materials

Soft plastic, hard plastic, jelly, rubber, Cyberskin are all porous materials, meaning that small particles and bacteria can penetrate the surface. This makes it impossible to completely clean these types of materials.

Therefore, it is recommended that you use a condom with these types of toys, especially if you are sharing them. Clean these toys with mild soapy water and dry gently with a towel. These materials are more easily damaged, so be sure to be gentle and make sure your toys are completely dry before storing.

    Non-propous
    materials

Silicone, glass, stainless steel and some hard plastics can all be washed using a mild soap (like you would use on your body) and warm water. Just be careful if your toy contains electrical parts.

Silicone and stainless steel toys without any electrical parts can also be boiled for sterilisation.

    The toys with electrical
    components

If your toys contain electrical components, be extra careful when cleaning them and always check the instructions provided with the toy. You can use a gentle cloth and soap to wipe or sex toy cleaner or cleaning wipe to down your toy, making sure that no water comes into contact with the electrical parts.
