Is Hemp Bondage Rope Suitable for Beginners?
Not really...
We wouldn’t particularly recommend hemp rope for beginners, and there are a few good reasons why:
- Hemp rope is expensive! If you’re just getting into it, you don’t want to be spending a lot of money on something you may not even enjoy.
- It can be difficult to clean, care for, and store. The natural material can be a lot to take on, and may be best left for when you’re more experienced.
- The scent can be a lot to get used to, especially if you’re completely unfamiliar with bondage rope.
But?
There’s always a but! Hemp rope can be good for starters, and if you do your research, you minimize any potential risk. Hemp rope has really excellent tooth; you can feel quite certain that your hitches will do the job to hold things in place with far fewer knots required. So while we don’t recommend it, we can’t really stop you.

Do your research
Remember that Shibari is an ancient, intricate technique that is aesthetic and functional as well as sensual. True masters of Shibari have studied for long periods of time. It is important to be well-informed before you begin to ensure the safety and comfort of all players.
Safety first!
Always have a pair of safety scissors on hand, like the ones recommended above. Scissors like these are essential back-ups in case something goes wrong during the session, or, perhaps more awkwardly, if you just have trouble untying them at the end of play. It happens to the best of us!
Have a safe word
Trust and mutual consent between partners is the foundation of bondage. However, it may be hard to distinguish between participating in the ‘scene’ and an honest request to slow down or stop the experience in the middle of a session. Ensure you establish a safe word with your partner that is distinct enough from your play to take them out of it.
Communicate
When you play, pay attention to any tingling, numbness, coldness, or burning in your limbs, especially your hands and fingers, and notify your partner immediately. You don’t want to risk permanent nerve damage for the sake of a scene, and a good top will understand and respect good communication.
Suspension
Suspension and partial suspension is the practice of tying a person in such a way as to support their weight with rope. Partial suspension means that part of a person’s weight is supported by the rope, e.g. their torso, or their legs;
Full suspension means their entire body is lifted off the ground and is supported only by the rope.
How to clean hemp rope
Cleaning bondage rope can be a little more complex than other toys, hemp is a natural material that can develop rot and mildew. Cleaning your rope is not recommended, as you need to wash, dry, singe and oil it every time. Each time you repeat this process it weakens the rope’s fibers, which is very dangerous as it makes play unpredictable, and makes the rope unfit for suspensions. The main thing to consider is that natural ropes will get moldy if they're not dried correctly, so make sure you look at the guide provided with the rope to ensure it lasts as long as it should.

Soft plastic, hard plastic, jelly, rubber, Cyberskin are all porous materials, meaning that small particles and bacteria can penetrate the surface. This makes it impossible to completely clean these types of materials.
