Starter Strap-on kit vs Separate harness & dildo
- Kit- with a starter strap-on kit, you’ll get the essentials needed to start your strap-on journey, and you’ll know that each part of the kit fits properly- it will also be the cheaper option; the downside to a kit is that you cannot choose your own strap-on or harness (i.e color, shape, texture)
- Separate- buying your starter strap-on essentials separately means that you can choose the strap-on design, color, shape, size, and texture as well as the harness material and color; the downside is that you may find your strap-on is not compatible with the harness you purchased- this is usually the more expensive option
How to choose a starter strap on
- Dildo length & girth- for beginners, a small strap-on with a less intimidating girth is a good option- especially for pegging
- Dildo material- the material of your strap-on depends on what you like; if you prefer flexibility, silicone, PVC, or TPE create soft strap-ons, however only silicone is body-safe; if you prefer complete rigidity, harder silicone, glass, or metal are ideal, body-safe materials and can offer pin-point pleasure
- Harness style- for comfort, a pair of strap-on underwear can be great for beginners due to its comfortability and ease of use, however strap-on underwear can easily be weighed down by large strap-ons or depending on the fit; the harness is a favorite as it offers a secure fit, and allows use of larger strap-ons with ease, however some people find them tricky to put on and time-consuming to adjust
- Harness adjustability- you can adjust a strap-on harness to fit your body perfectly, for example with plus size harnesses, however you cannot adjust a pair of strap-on underwear; for beginners, adjustability is a must as this helps you to get used to what works and feels best and feel comfortable is the most important thing
- Multiple size o-rings- for those who own and use multiple sizes of strap-on, multiple sized O-rings are a must to be able to use the strap-on with a harness; some harnesses/strap-on underwear offer a single flexible o-ring that can adjust to different sized strap-on bases
- Vibrations?- some people love vibrations and cannot orgasm without them, some can take them or leave them, and others like to keep vibrations far away from them- all are valid! Before buying your strap-on kit, ask yourself if you want a vibrating strap-on– if yes, you can purchase one with a motor inside or you can purchase a hollow strap-on which can be filled with a bullet vibrator
- Price- strap-on kits can range from $30-$150, however all that matters is that you purchase a kit that has everything that you need

Reviews of the 6 best starter strap ons
Test Winner New Comers Strap-On Kit
If you’re a total newbie to pegging and penetration and want to experiment with a bit of backdoor fun, this starter strap on kit could be for you! With beginner-friendly dimensions of 0.75 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches in insertable length, this dildo will provide comfortable penetration while the curved, upward-facing bulbed tip is ideal for stimulating the G-spot or P-spot. The dildo is made with body-friendly silicone, and the harness comes with unisex adjustable straps, so no matter your gender, you and your partner can embark on a fun pegging adventure.
Pros
- ✅ Bulbed tip to hit P-spot
- ✅ Adjustable harness
- ✅ Ideal for pegging beginners
Cons
- ❌ Potentially too small for adequate vaginal penetration
- ❌ Unrealistic look and color
- ❌ First-timers might find the bulbed tip uncomfortable
Verdict
The New Comers Strap On Kit is an ideal beginner strap on set, and its unisex, beginner-friendly size makes it great for any nervous anal first timer to feel at ease. However, if you and your partner both have a vagina and you’re looking to use this strap on for PIV sex, the small dildo in this kit might not be large enough to provide intense sensations, especially if you’re already experienced in penetration (either from toys or penises.) That being said, this strap on kit comes with an adjustable harness, which is compatible with other flared-base dildos up to 1.25 inches in diameter. So if this dildo is too small, simply switch things up with your other toys and use the New Comers dildo uniquely for pegging and anal purposes – win-win!
Buy, if you...
- Need a thin strap on for anal purposes
- Want a strap on dildo that is suitable for both anal and vaginal penetration
- Have never been penetrated before and need a strap on with beginner-friendly length and girth
- Are plus-sized and looking for an adjustable harness
Don't buy, if you...
- Want a strap on with a more realistic size
- Need a strap on for simulated vaginal sex between two vagina owners - if you're already experienced in penetration, this strap on will probably be too small
- Prefer dildos with representational, skin-toned exteriors
Cheapest Strap U Pegged Pegging Dildo with Harness
Ideal for total pegging beginners, the Strap U Pegging Dildo is our winner for the cheapest starter strap on kit in our round-up. Under $40, this strap on offers a harness with adjustable straps (both waist and thigh) as well as a beginner-friendly, slim strap on dildo, which offers comfortable penetration with its insertable length of 4 inches and 1 inch in diameter. The dildo is made from non-porous, body-safe silicone and is easy to clean.
Pros
- ✅ Adjustable harness
- ✅ Beginner-friendly dimensions
- ✅ Pocket for bullet vibrator
- ✅ Smooth shaft offers comfortable penetration for first-timers
Cons
- ❌ Harness size isn't plus-sized friendly
- ❌ No curved tip for targeted P-spot stimulation
- ❌ Unrealistic look and features
Verdict
When it comes to picking a beginner dildo for pegging, the most important factor (in my view) is the girth of the dildo. Length can always be adjusted by how deeply your partner penetrates, but a dildo that is too girthy will immediately pose a problem. Pegging dildos need to provide comfortable penetration for first-timers, and that’s why this pegging dildo by Strap U is so great: the shaft is completely smooth, making for easy, gliding penetration. While the lack of a bulbed tip might make for less precise P-spot or G-spot stimulation, the dildo still bends a little in an upward direction – so it’s all just a question of angle! You can also move on to girthier dildos once you’ve mastered this smaller toy.
If you’ve enjoyed butt plugs or other general prostate stimulation, this pegging dildo will also be a great step-up into full penetration, although its dimensions cater mostly to beginners and first-timers.
One downside with this kit is that the harness is not particularly plus-size friendly: if you’re curvier, we can recommend the Curvy Collection Divine Strap-on Harness by Sportsheets for a similar style but more inclusive sizing.
Buy, if you...
- Are totally new to penetration and need a strap on with beginner-friendly dimensions
- Need a slim strap on dildo for anal purposes
- Looking for a harness with adjustable waist and thigh straps
Don't buy, if you...
- Are experienced with strap on sex - the dildo might be too small for your needs
- Want a bulbed tip for P-spot or G-spot stimulation - the shaft is completely smooth
- Prefer a strap on dildo with realistic, representational skin tones and life-like features
Vibrating Tracey Cox Supersex Strap-On Pegging Kit (4 Piece)
If you’re looking for a versatile pegging starter kit, look no further than the Tracy Cox Supersex Strap-On Pegging Kit. This beginner strap on set comes with two dildos, making it perfect for switching up play and ideal for same-sex couples: the textured dildo comes with an insertable length of 6 inches, while the slim, smooth dildo boasts a beginner-friendly 4.5 insertable inches. The kit itself is both comprehensive and simple for newbies: the harness is easy to use and comes with large, plus-size friendly adjustable straps, and the larger dildo comes with an insertable bullet vibrator for enhanced sensations. Both dildos are made from hypoallergenic body-friendly silicone and can be used vaginally and anally. If you’re looking for a starter strap on kit equipped for versatility, you’ve found your top pick!
Pros
- ✅ Detachable O-ring
- ✅ Bullet vibe included
- ✅ Plus-size friendly adjustable harness
- ✅ Super versatile
- ✅ Both dildos equipped with flared suction cup bases for hands-free fun
- ✅ Silicone dildos and machine-washable harness make for easy maintenance
- ✅ Choose between a smooth dildo and a larger, textured dildo depending on your needs/desires
Cons
- ❌ Harness can be a bit loose if you have a slimmer frame, make sure to adjust correctly so it stays in place during play
- ❌ O-ring can stretch over time
- ❌ Straps can be awkward
- ❌ Bullet vibe takes LR44 batteries which can be hard to find
Verdict
Whether you’re a pegging beginner or simply looking for a starter strap on for your toy collection, this Tracy Cox kit has something for everyone. The smaller, smooth dildo makes for an excellent first-timer anal toy, while the longer, textured dildo is girthy enough to provide intense sensations for both vaginal and anal penetration.
While this set is marketed as a pegging kit, I think it would also make a great investment for a same-sex couple. If you and your partner both have vaginas, the two strap on dildos could be used as penis replacements for both vaginal and anal sex. Both dildos are also equipped with suction cup bases, so you could even make use of this kit whilst single.
For me, this kit ticks all the boxes when it comes to overall versatility: the harness even comes with an adjustable O-ring, so you can use it with your other dildos without hassle. Both the textured dildo and the harness are also equipped with space for a bullet vibrator, so if you don’t like the provided Tracy Cox toy you can pop in your own favorite bullet vibe (up to 2 inches in length) for heightened sensations. Bottom line: for under $60, you’re basically getting 4 toys in one and endless opportunities for fun play!
Buy, if you...
- Plan on incorporating pegging into your sex lives regularly
- Want to experiment with different strap on sizes
- Want a starter strap on suitable for anal and vaginal penetration
- Need an adjustable harness
- Want a complete strap-on kit
Don't buy, if you...
- Wear a dress size larger than a US 28, as this particular harness will be too small
- Prefer a brief style harness
- Prefer a strapless strap-on
- Prefer your own dildos.

Sportsheets Anal Explorer Strap On Kit
If you want to enjoy some progressive pegging play with your partner (alliteration, anybody?) then you might want to opt for this starter strap on kit by Sportsheets. This set comes with a harness and two different sized dildos, and is ideal if you’re looking to experiment with anal play and progressively work your way up to a girthier dildo.
The slimmer strap on dildo in this set has an insertable length of 5.5 inches and a first-timer friendly diameter of 0.8 inches, making it ideal as a starter strap on for a total beginner. The larger dildo has an insertable length of 6.5 inches and a diameter of 1.5 inches, making it a pretty realistic-sized dildo suitable either for vaginal or anal penetration. Both these dildos also have smooth, silicone exteriors, making for comfortable penetration for first-timers or anal novices.
Pros
- ✅ Two dildos for progressive penetration
- ✅ Ideal as a starter strap on
- ✅ Adjustable harness
Cons
- ❌ PVC harness
- ❌ Unrealistic texture and look
- ❌ Thicker tip on larger dildo might be uncomfortable for anal beginners
- ❌ Expensive when compared to similar competitor kits
Verdict
While this kit has great novice-friendly dimensions and comes with two dildos for varied fun, I have to knock some points off the overall score for its use of polyvinyl (PVC) in the harness. PVC is a toxic plastic that can leak phthalates, and phthalates have been linked to everything from cancer to infertility and are best kept a long distance from your genitals. If you want to learn more about the dangers of PVC sex toys, you can read our article here by Bedbible’s in-house blogger, Edwina.
Another reason I’m knocking a point off this kit is that it’s also super pricey, at over $100 for the two dildos and harness in the bundle. In my view, if a toy is costing you over $100, it better not have any toxic plastics in it!
Nonetheless, I can’t deny that the two dildos in this kit would make for fun, progressive anal play, and pegging. If you like these dildos but want to steer clear of PVC, you can always buy this kit and simply recycle the harness! If not, make sure to clean your harness properly: the harness should be machine washed (cold) and left to air dry. Read Edwina’s blog for more information on cleaning PVC sex toys.
Buy, if you...
- Want a starter strap on kit with varying sizes to experiment with
- Are a total beginner to pegging and anal play
- Want a strap on with a suction cup, so it can be adapted for solo play
Don't buy, if you...
- Prefer realistic, skin-toned or representational dildos
- Want to steer clear of PVC materials
- Prefer dildos with lots of texture
Lovehoney Beginner's Unisex Strap-On Harness Kit with 5 Inch Pegging Dildo
If you’re interested in pegging but feel intimidated by the idea of being penetrated for the first time, this Lovehoney Beginner Strap On Set should help put your mind at ease. This kit comes with a cute, heart-shaped harness and a smooth, thin strap on dildo ideal for your first adventure in Pegging-ville. With just 0.9 inches in diameter and a smooth, non-textured shaft, this strap on dildo is designed for first-time anal penetration – you can go as slow as you like with 4.5 insertable inches to play with at your pace.
This pegging starter kit is also ideal if you want a fuss-free strap on experience: the harness is machine washable and the dildo is made with non-porous body-safe silicone, so you just need to give it a wash with soap and water after each use to keep it clean and safe.
Pros
- ✅ Comes with 3 different O-ring sizes
- ✅ Smooth shaft for comfortable penetration
- ✅ Ideal for first-time pegging
Cons
- ❌ No curved or bulbed tip: might be less effective when it comes to targeted G-spot or P-spot stimulation
- ❌ Unrealistic look and texture
- ❌ Harness can chafe the legs
Verdict
This beginner strap on kit is great for two reasons: 1. The dimensions of this toy are ideal if you’re feeling intimidated by the idea of anal penetration, and 2. The harness is versatile, with three different O-ring sizes – this means you can keep and reuse this harness with other toys for all your future pegging adventures!
When it comes to using this strap on between two vagina-owners, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. Unless you’re a beginner and looking for the smallest dildo possible, you might find that the slimness of the dildo and its lack of texture makes it pretty uninspiring during vaginal penetration. However, if you’re in need of something beginner-friendly, it might be of use.
Overall, this pegging kit makes for a great starter strap on toy; it’s also super affordable, coming in at under $40 for the strap on and the reusable harness together. Some users have reported that the harness material can chafe slightly, so be careful not to fasten it too tight if you have sensitive skin.
Buy, if you...
- Need a small starter strap on for your first-time pegging
- Want to be able to re-use your harness with other sized dildos
- Want an easy-to-use beginner pegging kit
Don't buy, if you...
- Want a starter strap on with a representational, skin-toned shaft
- Prefer a bulbed tip for targeted G-spot or P-spot stimulation
- Want a dildo for regular vaginal penetration - the lack of texture and small dimensions might not provide optimal sensations

Fetish Fantasy Beginner's Vibrating Strap-On 4.5 Inch Dildo
This set is a little bit different from our other recommendations: this starter strap on comes in the form of a plush thong: simply pop your dildo into the O-ring and pull on the thong as if it were a normal pair of panties! This style of harness is ideal for those with limited mobility in their hands and who might struggle with fiddly harnesses. It’s also a great pick for femme-presenting individuals searching for a feminine-looking harness or style. The dildo itself has a beginner-friendly length of 4.5 inches and 1.4 inches in diameter, and curves upwards on the search of that elusive P-spot or G-spot.
What I like about this strap on is the dildo’s progressive girth: the tip remains small while the shaft increases in size all the way up to the base: this allows you to tease your partner (or have your partner tease you!) with progressive penetration; it also offers beginners some freedom to experiment. On the downside, the dildo is made of soft plastic, so if you know me by now you’ll know that I’ll be docking a point from this toy on the grounds of porous material!
Pros
- ✅ Simple wearability for a beginner
- ✅ Feminine design
- ✅ Comes with 3 O-rings
- ✅ Easy to wear if you struggle with fiddly harnesses
Cons
- ❌ Not plus-size friendly
- ❌ Harness not sturdy; dildo could feel "flimsy" and require constant placement during penetration
- ❌ Porous materials
- ❌ Bullet vibrations are weak
Vibrations: The vibrations of the Fetish Fantasy Beginner's Vibrating Strap-On 4.5 Inch Dildo are quiet, gently, and very buzzy
Verdict
While I initially thought that this harness was more of a novelty toy than a serious bit of pegging kit, the easy design actually serves a purpose: its slip-on style makes it easy for those who struggle with (or simply dislike) fiddly harnesses! If you hate fussing around with adjustable straps and fastenings, this gorgeous plush harness might be for you: this is also a great choice for you if you are femme-presenting and dislike the idea of wearing a bulky harness.
However, there are a couple of downsides with this piece of kit which makes it less inclusive than I’d like it to be. Firstly: while the ensemble is pretty, the stability of the harness is less than optimal. The waistband is thin and pretty flimsy, not to mention that the harness is unsuitable for anyone over a US size 14. The design is also pretty feminine, so if you’re masc-presenting it might not be your favorite from our list. However, as I love all the readers at Bedbible, I looked out some similar, more inclusive alternatives: if you’re femme-presenting and looking for a feminine-styled harness with better hold, this Chantilly Lace Corset-Back Strap-on Harness by Sportsheets offers a gorgeous look in red lace, without compromising on stability and sturdiness. There’s even a plus-sized friendly version, with a 72-inch harness size and stunning black lace design. Similarly, if you struggle with fiddly fastenings and want a slip-on harness with a sturdier fit, a larger harness size, or a less feminine design, you might benefit from using a pair of harness briefs. You can find harness briefs in every color, style, and gender code, and they’re much sturdier than thongs when it comes to pegging and strap on sex. Despite the lack of inclusivity, the design and concept of this harness is pretty useful for beginners: if you fall within the size guide and you want an easily wearable starter strap on harness, the plush thong is for you!
Buy, if you...
- Need an easy-to-wear harness
- Want a strap on dildo that gets progressively girthier
- Want a feminine-looking harness
Don't buy, if you...
- Want a sturdy, traditional strap on harness
- Want a starter strap on with a curved tip for G-spot and P-spot stimulation

Dildo too big?
If you find deep penetration painful, you might want to consider a couple of things:
- Is my dildo too big?
- Is the rhythm too fast?
- Is my partner too big?
- Does my partner penetrate too deeply?
If you’ve ruled out any health conditions and you want to incorporate a tool into your sex life that will help keep penetration pain-free, try a penis buffer: you can attach this accessory to any real penis or dildo to ensure that penetrative sex never goes beyond a certain depth. This accessory is ideal for use with a starter strap on, allowing you to experiment with your limits and see what feels good while protecting your delicate tush.
Ohnut Custom Penetration Depth Buffer
OhNut is a accessory that stops any penis or dildo from penetrating too deep in the anus or vagina. With 4 stackable rings, you can adapt penetration to your needs and experience level.
How to use a starter strap on for the first time
If you’re using your new strap on for pegging, know that when performed correctly, pegging can be an exhilarating experience: many women love the intense role reversal, while those with a prostate love the physical sensation of all that P-spot stimulation! However, it’s not as simple as PIV sex: there are some steps you want to take to make sure that the experience goes as smoothly as possible when trying out pegging for the first time:
- Talk beforehand: talk about each other’s limits and rules: if you wish, feel free to employ a safe word for peace of mind
- Take a shower: shower and clean your anus thoroughly with some soap and water
- Douche: many people like to use an anal douche beforehand to clean the anus thoroughly. Anal douching helps get rid of anything that might still be lingering in your rectum, and it also helps you put your mind at ease. The number one concern most people have about pegging (or any anal play, for that matter) is making a mess, so being able to get rid of that particular worry helps you relax during the act
- Spend time warming up and getting aroused: you and your partner both want to be as turned on as possible before beginning, so engage in some fun foreplay beforehand! You can focus the foreplay on the butt area by massaging the buttocks, caressing the anus, and even using your tongue to stimulate the area – however, always make sure to use Dental Dams if you’re going to use your tongue on this part of the body!
- Use plenty of lube: then use some more! The anus takes time to relax and can be super tight even once slightly dilated – unlike the vagina, the anus has no natural lubricant, so it’s on you to make sure the area is lubricated before any sort of penetration
- Relax: Pegging can be incredibly pleasurable, so try your best to enjoy it. During anal penetration, you might feel as if you need to poop – this is simply the anus contracting and using the same muscles used when going to the bathroom. If you didn’t need to poop beforehand and you’re all cleaned out, don’t worry about these sensations – they’re normal!
Tracy Cox Supersex Flexible Tip Anal Douche
If you want to douche before pegging, use a douche with a flexible tip, such as Tracy Cox’s Supersex anal douche: this tool can hold 5.4fl oz of water and will give you the cleanest tush you’ve ever had. You can watch this video guide here if you need guidance on using a douche for the first time.
Lovehoney Discover Water-Based Anal Lubricant
When it comes to anal play, lube is your number 1 desert island essential. Don’t even try any backdoor action without lube – you’ll not only risk tearing the anus, but it won’t feel good for either partner. Lube up with a high-quality water-based lube, such as Lovehoney’s Discover lube.
FAQ
What is a Starter Strap-On?
A starter strap on is a dildo attached to a harness, designed to be worn by a partner during pegging or sex simulation. Starter strap ons tend to be smaller in girth and width than regular dildos, and are ideal for beginners. Starter strap ons, like all strap ons, come in a range of shapes, sizes, textures, colors etc., so there is something to suit everyone's desires. You can wear a strap on in a harness or a pair of strap on underwear; some people prefer a harness as they can hold heavier strap ons, and offer a more secure fit, whereas some prefer strap on underwear because they are simple to slip on and comfortable. The best size strap on for beginners will depend on your experience with penetration as a whole; if you have experience being penetrated and it was comfortable, then a regular, realistic size strap on will be fine.
