By Melissa Lander / May 15, 2022
When it comes to strap-ons and strap-on kits, sizing can feel more than confusing!
That’s why we’ve created this handy guide to help you choose the best size for you and your partner.
Sizing and measuring, though it may sound boring, is an essential part of finding a strap on that feels comfortable and suits your needs perfectly.
From strapless to hollow we’ll cover the best ways to measure, get comfortable, and find your perfect strap on!

Finding your match
It’s important to measure your couples strap-on for certain parts of your strap on, as some aspects are integral to your comfort!
For example, the bulb of the strapless strap on, the canal of a hollow strap on, and a harness all require measuring before buying to ensure optimal comfort.
There are a wide range of strap on sizes available which is great as this means there is something to suit everyone; for example, check out our round-up of the best plus-size strap-on harnesses!

Beginner
For strap-on beginners, a length of between 3 inches and 5 inches is substantial so as not to be too intimidating- especially if the receiver doesn’t have much experience with penetration. A diameter of between 1.1 and 2 is a good thickness for beginners.
Our recommendations
- 4.5 inch – The Fun Factory Limba
- 5 inch – Lovehoney’s Beginner Strap On Kit

Intermediate
If you’re looking to size up from beginner, we recommend anywhere up to 8 inches. A sufficient diameter for intermediate is up to 2.5 inches.
Our recommendations
- 6 inch – Lovehoney Glitter Silicone Strap On
- 7 inch – Lovehoney Advanced Unisex Strap On Kit

Experienced
For the experienced players craving girth, a length of up to 12 or more inches is available; and a diameter of 3-3.5 inches can be obtained. Ensure that you use a good amount of water-based lube and take your time.
Our recommendations
- 8 inch – BASICS Glow In the Dark Strap On
- 9 inch – Cloud 9 Pro Suction Cup Dildo
- 10 inch – King Cock Elite
- 11 inch – King Cock Dual Density
- 12 inch – Doc Johnson Realistic
Extra slim or extra girthy?
There are a range of diameters available, however you might be a bit confused about which is best!
An extra slim strap on would be ideal for first time pegging dildos which is typically what is included in pegging kits or on his and hers strap-ons, whilst a girthy option would be great for experienced strap on play.
It’s also important to note that certain stores use different measurement systems for diameter, width, and circumference; US stores usually measure a toy using the diameter (straight across the shaft/width), and UK stores often use circumference (measuring around the shaft of a toy).

Extra slim
0.8 inch- 1.25- Tantus Bend Over Strap On Kit
Girthy
2.75 inch- Hankey’s Toys Topher
How to measure strap on size
The best way to ensure that a starter strap on is comfortable and suitable for your anatomy is to measure the part of your body that it will go inside/on.

How to measure a vagina
- You’ll need a dildo or a shaft like object which is clean and smooth
- The person with the vagina should lie back and become stimulated
- Slide the dildo/shaft into the vagina until it cannot go further (do this gently)
- Mark the point on the object where the vagina has reached (use a marker/pen)
- Now, you can remove the object and measure from the tip up to the mark
- You now have the length that the vagina can take
How to measure for a hollow strap on
To do this, you’ll only need to measure for the diameter of your erect penis; the length does not matter. The canal in a hollow strap on can range from 1.25-2 inches.
Note: Use a soft, flexible measuring tape for safety!
- For this bit, you need to have an erection or as close to an erection as you can
- Take the measuring tape and wrap it around the girthiest part of your penis
- This is now your measurement in circumference, however you need to convert this to diameter
- To find the diameter, you can divide the number by 3.14 or use an online converter
- Once you have the diameter, you can shop for your new hollow strap on!
How to measure for a harness
Measuring for a harness is super easy; all you’ll need is a measuring tape!
Underwear
Measuring for strap on underwear is as simple as knowing your underwear size! Sizes usually range from 4-30 in US.
Harness
Simply wrap the measuring tape around your waist and make a note of the size; next, do the same thing but around the upper thighs- these are the places where the harness sits. You now have your measurements and can purchase a harness that fits perfectly!
Types of strap on
There are 4 types of strap on which can offer very different things!
The dildo style is a favorite amongst peggers, while the hollow is a much-loved tool for those with erectile struggles.
Some come with a true-to-life phallic resemblance, while others can transport you to fantasy worlds with their appearance. Whatever you desire, there’s sure to be a strap on out there to suit you!

Dildo
- a dildo with a flared base (can be a suction cup or balls)
- comes in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, textures etc.
- can be vibrating/non-vibrating
- can be used in a harness or strap on underwear
Strapless
- a strapless strap on is worn inside of a vagina
- the smaller bulbed end sits in the vagina while the long shaft is used to penetrate

- hollow strap ons are great for erectile problems or adding length

You can also get a prostate strap-on perfect for pegging. Or strap-ons in different colors like pink strap-ons and black strap-ons. There a strap-ons for thighs and strap-ons for men or even realistic strap-ons typically a real feel strap-on. If you want a harness that can fit even big bodies we recommend a plus size strap-on. And if you want it big in another way, why not take a look at some large strap-ons? To round off, we’ve also reviewed glow-in-the-dark strap-ons, so that you can see where the dong is going even in the dark, or ejaculating strap-ons for an extra realistic experience. And finally, double penetration strap ons to use for both anal and vaginal pleasure. Or double anal – you decide.
