Cock rings are one of those sex toys that have gained an unfair reputation of being scary, intimidating and only something you need if you’re a kinky kind of person.

However, the reality is that they’re one of the most surprisingly diverse sex toys out there, are super easy to use, and can do a lot of good for all kinds of people.

Of course, the first steps to becoming a fan is to answer the question of what do cock rings do, as well as how to use a cock ring safely and effectively.

Keep scrolling to learn all that and more, including which of the many types of cock ring are best for you, and ways to use a cock ring that you may not have thought of before.

What Does a Cock Ring Do?

Cock rings, or penis rings as they’re sometimes known, are worn around the penis, usually at the base. There are a few other types of rings that go near the tip, around the glans, or others that go around the testicles.

The main way they work is by restricting the blood from flowing away from the penis when erect. This is how cock rings can create stronger erections and/or maintain erections for longer. They can even make you look a bit bigger, thanks to the extra blood down there!

Penis rings aren’t only great for the wearer, either. These days, there are countless types of cock rings out there, many of which are designed to pleasure your partner, too.

Vibrating cock rings often come with ridges or arms that can stimulate the clitoris or perineum during penetrative sex – a great solution for the many, many vulva-owners out there who can’t orgasm from penetration alone. There are even some that come with a dildo attached for some spectacular double-penetration action!

Who Uses Cock Rings?

First off, anyone can use a cock ring! Having a penis is an advantage, but a cock ring can be a real upgrade to a dildo, too (more on that later).

The benefits can be felt on any penis-owner, regardless of size, girth or other factors. If you are looking for a cock ring in a specific size we have guides for both the best big cock rings and the best small cock rings.

That being said, penis rings can be a valuable aid for those who experience erectile difficulties or dysfunction. One type of erectile dysfunction, for instance, is called ‘venous leakage’, which is a bit of a scary way to say that the tissues in the penis can fail to properly ‘lock in’ blood. A tight cock ring can help with this by preventing the blood from leaving the penis and maintaining the erection.

They can be also great tools for helping with performance anxiety. It can be hard to stay erect when you’re stressed or nervous, but using a cock ring can make it easier to stay hard, which can make you feel more at ease and ‘in the moment’, which, in turn, can make your erection even better! It’s a cycle of good things.

However there are some instances when a cock ring may not be the best idea. If you have a blood or nerve disorder, or take a blood-thinning medication, then it may not mix well with how cock rings work to restrict blood flow. If you’re in doubt, talk with your physician before popping one on.

Types of Cock Ring

Silicone (+ Other Stretchy Materials)

The simplest type of cock ring is those that are made with stretchy materials that can provide the tightness around your penis whilst still being easy to put on and take off.

Stretchy cock rings come in lots of materials, including soft plastic and rubber, but, as with all sex toys, it’s always best to opt for silicone cock rings. Silicone is non-porous, making it safer for your body and much easier to clean.

These extra thick ones from Lovehoney are cushioned for comfort and come in a set of three so you can find the best fit for your penis, or even experiment with using one on your testicles!

Adjustable

If you’re more interested in versatility, try an adjustable penis ring. They allow you to adjust the tightness of the ring to your preferences, or, if you’re a beginner, start loose and increase the tightness as you get used to the sensation.

You can also easily transform these into testicle rings, or even penis and testicle rings if you’re feeling really adventurous!

Vibrating

Vibrating cock rings allow both you and your partner to reap the rewards of penis rings. They come in so many different forms that it would be impossible to cover them all here, but we’ve narrowed down the list with some of our favorites.

When picking a vibrating cock ring, it’s important to consider how you’ll be using it, and how it will fit you both. For example, some only have small vibrating mounds, which may not be ideal if your partner is going to be riding you upright with their clitoris further away from the action. Take a look at our guide for rabbit cock rings.

This cock ring from Tenga is highly rated, due to its long vibrating section that reaches to where it’s needed and delivers powerful vibrations.

A downside with some vibrating cock rings, including the one above, is that the controls are on the ring itself.

That means that if you want to increase the vibration speed or change to a different pattern, you have to reach down and do it manually. A little awkward, especially if you’re really in the zone.

Enter: remote control vibrating penis rings. All the great stuff, with less of the fiddling. Some, like this one from We-Vibe, can be app controlled, giving you precise controls and even the option for long-distance fun. And it is at the same time a teardrop cock ring stimulating your perinium.

Rabbit vibrators are well known for their pleasure prowess. By stimulating the inside of the vagina and the external clitoris at the same time, they bring a whole new dimension to orgasms for those with vulvas.

Why not bring some of that heat to your penis ring play? The rabbit-style ears on this ring vibrate and wriggle against the clitoris or perineum, giving precise and powerful sensations for your partner.

Metal

For many people, a metal cock ring like this is the first thing they picture when they think of the sex toy.

While it might not be the most popular choice anymore (and probably aren’t the best choice for beginners), metal cock rings are still very much around, and they do have their virtues.

They can give you some seriously firm and weighty sensations, and can even be gently warmed or cooled to change up the experience. Just make sure to use plenty of lube!

This one from Lovehoney is designed to go behind both your penis and testicles, so is best put on whilst still flaccid.

With a Ball Ring

If your balls want to get in on the action, metal cock rings aren’t your only option.

This silicone cock and ball ring has a bullet vibrator on top that delivers buzzy sensations to your penis and testicles as well as your partner.

The benefit of using a Tri cock ring or dual cock ring is that you have a bit flexibility about when you can put it on, though you may still find it easier when flaccid.

With a Butt Plug

When you just can’t choose between penis play or a bit of backdoor fun, why not try out a toy that does both?

Not only will the cock ring boost your erection, the butt plug with tease and tantalize your p-spot for incredible blended sensations.

This cock ring with a butt plug from Fun Factory is ergonomically designed to be comfortable to wear and easy to insert. Use it while penetrating a partner or go solo and pair with a Fleshlight or another kind of stroker!

How to Use a Cock Ring

1. Have a Trim

There aren’t many things that are more of a turn-off for you or your partner than a sudden scream of pain as a penis ring gets caught and tugs on your pubes.

That’s not to say that you need to get a full Brazilian wax to wear a cock ring – just do some light ‘manscaping’ to make sure that you don’t have any longer hairs that could get caught up in the action.

2. Lube Up

Having learned the answer to the question ‘what does a cock ring do?’, you should now know that cocks rings are tight. They shouldn’t be uncomfortable, but they have to be tight enough to actually do their job.

And that means that you’ll need some assistance to get them on, which comes in the form of lubrication. Lube is your best friend in any and all sexual scenarios, and here it will help your cock ring to glide on without pain or friction.

Depending on the material of your cock ring, you may have to go for a specific type of lube. For example, silicone rings can only be used with water-based lubes.

3. Pop It On an Flaccid (or Semi-Erect) Penis

Did I mention that cock rings are tight? Trying to put them on an erect penis, even with a copious amount of lube, may not be the comfiest (or sexiest) experience in the world.

That’s why it’s recommended to put your cock ring on before you’re fully erect. It will be much easier to place the ring of the head of the penis and slide it down the shaft to the position that’s most comfortable for you. Once it’s in place, you can start getting in the mood!

Penis rings generally sit at the base of the penis, before the balls – and this is the place I recommend for beginners. They can also go around the penis and testicles, but this can be a little tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that balls require a delicate touch!

4. Keep Track of the Time

A cock ring shouldn’t stay on your penis for more than 20 to 30 minutes. Any more, and you risk doing damage to the sensitive tissue down there.

Think of it like wearing a rubber band on your finger – it’s alright for a while, but then it starts to hurt, change color and badly needs the blood to flow normally again. If you start to experience any of these kinds of symptoms, take off your cock ring straight away.

5. Remove it Gently

Once your cock ring has done its part, slide it off slowly and gently. Your penis is likely to be pretty sensitive at this point, and the last thing it needs is a penis ring being tugged off at lightning speed.

You can even apply some more lube before you take it off to make the whole thing smoother and easier.

Best Ways to Use a Cock Ring

So, you learned the answer to “what does a cock ring do?”, and found out the steps of how to use a cock ring – now it’s time to put it into practice!

Missionary

The best sex positions to use when wearing a cock ring are, unsurprisingly, the ones that allow maximum contact with the ring. This is especially true when using a penis ring that vibrates or has textures that are meant to stimulate the clitoris or perineum.

Missionary-style positions are an easy introduction to penetrative sex with a cock ring. The closeness of the two of you will mean that the ring will get some great contact with the clitoris, as well as creating some amazing feelings of connectedness as a couple.

Cowgirl

Positions where the receiver sits and rides the cock ring wearer are similarly good for getting up close and personal with all the right sweet spots.

‘Normal’ cowgirl (or cowperson), where the rider faces their partner, is fantastic for clit contact, as well as that much-needed eye contact. However, reverse riding, where the rider faces the other way, can be a great way to stimulate the perineum too.

If you find that you’re not getting enough contact with the cock ring, try having the wearer sit upright and then ride them while also sitting, reducing the space between you even more.

Doggy

Doggy-style positions, where the penetrator stands or kneels and the receiver positions themselves on all-fours facing the same way, can sometimes be hit-or-miss when it comes to penis ring stimulation.

However, they can be ideal for stimulating the perineum, which doesn’t always get the love it deserves.

Getting Hands-y

Penetrative sex is certainly not the only way to enjoy a cock ring. If you or your partner are partial to getting some sweet hand loving, then why not pop on a cock ring to enhance the experience?

Choosing to wear a penis ring while being pleasured by your partner’s (or your own) hands can make it last longer and make that sweet release even sweeter.

Put it on a Dildo

If either you or your partner don’t have a penis on which to place a cock ring, never fear! All of the amazing benefits of penis ring sex are not lost – just put one on your favorite dildo and get down to business.

You can use the dildo to penetrate yourself or a partner, either by itself or by placing it in a strap-on harness, and give them the extra stimulation of vibrations running all the way along the shaft.

You could also use the cock ring alone as an external vibrator for the clitoris, perineum, nipples, or any other erogenous zone.

Combine with a Masturbator

And last, but certainly not least, why not try combining a cock ring with your favorite pocket pussy or penis vibrator?

Wearing a cock ring whilst you enjoy the sensations of a Fleshlight, or any other kind of masturbator, can allow you to go for longer, and can make your orgasm even more explosive!

You may think of using a masturbator or stroker as a purely solo toy, but they can also be great additions to partner play, too. Let your partner take control as you sit back and savor the sensations – you could even invest in a clear one that allows you both to see the action unfold.
